Learning at Marinela Holistic Education

World-Class Schooling in Barbados

Our progressive education is strongly inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s pedagogy. We are a Waldorf-inspired school which places the developing child at the centre, prioritises holistic development and recognises the importance of intrinsic motivation and joyful learning.

We view education as an art, so each subject, whether mathematics, history, science or English, is presented in a way that appeals to and resonates with the child’s inner experience. Each subject is presented through direct, practical experience and is imbued with spirit and enlivened through art, poetry, music, and drama.

In the early grades, our curriculum provides an unhurried way of learning that protects childhood and minimises modern stressors, while encouraging children’s creative expression, developing their willpower, and fostering their imagination. As children mature, the learning process accelerates, providing a program that meets learners where they are, challenging their intellect and encouraging free thinking.

The teacher’s aim is to draw out the child’s inherent capacities by creating a classroom atmosphere that fills children with reverence, interest, wonder, and enthusiasm. Our teachers build deep connections with their students and lead with empathy, serving as role models and fostering trusting relationships.

“Where is the book in which the teacher can read about what teaching is? The children themselves are this book. We should not learn to teach out of any book other than the one lying open before us and consisting of the children themselves.”
— Rudolf Steiner

A Pedagogical Art

As a Waldorf-Inspired School, how do we approach teaching at Marinela?

At Marinela, teaching is a living art — attuned to each child’s inner unfolding and guided by a deep respect for their individuality. Drawing on the wisdom of Waldorf education, our approach balances academic excellence with imagination, movement, rhythm, and nature. Every lesson is crafted to meet the child where they are, nurturing curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Developmentally Appropriate

Our curriculum aligns with the natural stages of child development, introducing academic concepts at a time when children are most ready to absorb them. In the early years, play, movement, and imitation lay the foundation for future learning. As children grow, storytelling, artistic expression, and practical activities enrich their understanding. In the later grades, abstract thinking and independent inquiry are cultivated, ensuring learning unfolds in harmony with the child’s evolving capacities.

Rich in the Arts

Music, visual arts, crafts, drama, and movement are woven into daily learning, nurturing creativity and self-expression. Children engage in a variety of activities, including watercolour painting, illustration, flute/recorder/ukulele, group singing, recitation, knitting, crocheting, woodwork, pottery, and nature crafts.

The Power of Storytelling

Storytelling awakens the imagination, strengthens vocabulary and oral language, and captures attention in a way that fosters deep learning. Through stories, children absorb lessons in mathematics, history, geography, science, reading, and writing

Deep Connection to Nature

Spending time outdoors is essential to our approach. Children explore the flora and fauna of Barbados, develop environmental stewardship, and gain a deeper appreciation for our island’s natural world, enriching their science and nature studies.

Practical Life Skills

Children engage in meaningful real-world tasks such as housekeeping, cooking, sewing, building, and gardening. These activities build confidence, independence, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Screen-Free Learning

Technology is intentionally de-emphasised in the early years, both at school and at home. Families are encouraged to limit screen time to protect childhood, nurture imagination, and support healthy development.

Main Lesson Blocks

Traditional subjects are taught in immersive 3- to 4-week Main Lesson blocks, allowing children to form a deep, lasting connection with the material through exploration, discussion, and creative expression.

Daily free movement, imaginative games, martial arts, swimming, and tennis support children’s physical wellbeing. Meals are organic, plant-based, and locally sourced, often harvested from our own school gardens.

Mixed-Age Classrooms

Children learn in mixed-age groups, fostering collaboration, mentorship, and a sense of community. Younger students are inspired by older peers, while older students build confidence and leadership by guiding and supporting the younger ones.

Rooted in Wisdom, Growing for Tomorrow

Our Holistic Approach

Education is a living, breathing art — one that honours the whole child in all their unfolding. Rooted in the Waldorf tradition and attuned to the rhythms of our island home, this approach blends intellectual nourishment with soulful experience, practical activity, and reverence for life. At Marinela, childhood is not hurried but held — cherished as a sacred time in itself. Each child is met with deep respect for their pace, their wonder, and their unique light. What follows is a glimpse into how this philosophy lives and breathes in our daily rhythms.

Cherishing Childhood

From early childhood through to high school, Waldorf education goes far beyond dispensing academic information routinely. We develop nimble, humane, and discerning minds that young people will need to navigate the unpredictable future. Marinela’s teachers, experts in progressive forms of education, build each child’s capacity for sensitive engagement, original thinking, clear reasoning, and – lacking in many learners today – the initiative and ability to translate thought into action.

Rather than hurrying children prematurely into academic tasks beyond their intellectual and emotional development, our environment protects childhood, by introducing skills and concepts at a cognitively appropriate pace and developmental level. An approach that fosters intrinsically motivated lifelong learning.

By educating the hands, heart and head, we encourage resilience, compassion, creativity and curiosity. Our vibrant learning environment nurtures each child, so they blossom and develop the courage to believe in their unique qualities and inner talent. They embrace challenges with passion and perseverance, respectfully supporting each other to achieve.

Our core curriculum is based on an understanding of the developing child. We observe each individual closely and form a trusting relationship, which enables each person to feel truly seen and understood.

Our exciting hands-on pedagogy leads to deep interest and better retention of the material. Marinela graduates will be a new generation of leaders who love their community, think freely and are ready to meet the challenges of our changing world.

Challenging Thinking

As the children progress through our grades programme,  there is a strong emphasis on children being active in their own learning, as well as practice of new skills through reading, writing, computation and group activities. Understanding is demonstrated through projects, movement, discussions, self-created textbooks and learning reviews. A solid and practical base of knowledge is formed by relating lessons to the real world and each other. For example, during cooking class we might practise English vocabulary, Mathematics through measuring, and sciences by using ingredients grown in gardening classes.

We nurture strong language skills through storytelling, poetry, drama, and rich oral traditions. Children develop vocabulary, fluency, and confidence through recitation, literature, and creative writing. This immersive, artistic approach fosters deep comprehension, clear expression, and a lifelong love for language, ensuring well-rounded, articulate, and thoughtful communicators.

We nurture a deep understanding of mathematics through storytelling, hands-on activities, and practical use. Children explore numbers, mathematical concepts, and geometry in a tangible, imaginative way, building a strong foundation in numeracy. Through rhythm, movement, creative problem-solving, and real-life applications, they develop fluency, confidence, and a love for mathematics. Geometry, in particular, is studied through practical use and artistic activities, fostering spatial awareness and an appreciation for the shapes and patterns in the world around them. This immersive approach ensures that children become thoughtful, resourceful, and enthusiastic learners in mathematics.

Our science education is a journey of discovery, crafted to align with the developmental stages of childhood. Our approach avoids rote memorisation of textbooks or premature abstract reasoning and instead builds understanding through sensory exploration, living pictures, careful observation, and critical thinking in relation to first-hand experiences. The result? Graduates who excel in science, technology, engineering, and medicine are equipped not just with knowledge but with an appreciation for the interconnectedness of life.

All this learning takes place in our wholesome environment, surrounding our learners with nature, beauty and time to enjoy the outdoors. Together we learn, grow, explore and lay the foundation for our future global citizens!
